FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

World Social Forum founding figure visits Australia

Leading social activist and thinker Francisco ('Chico') Whitaker will visit Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane from 11-19 May 2005, his first tour to Australia. Mr Whitaker will give a series of public lectures and will also meet union leaders, and church and community groups.

Mr Whitaker is a prominent international activist from Brazil and one of the founding figures of the World Social Forum (WSF), a civil society gathering against economic rationalism that is rapidly spreading and consolidating around the globe. He has also been active in Brazil's Workers Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores - PT) and is currently a member of the Executive Secretariat of the Brazilian Catholic Bishops' Justice and Peace Commission (CBJP).

Mr Whitaker's visit is being facilitated by the New Pentecost Forum but is organised independently by a network of many civil society groups.
