Vatican II in the Context of Globalisation

Lay Contribution to the Church and the World

St Gabriel's Centre, Bangkok, Thailand
8-11 October 2002

Introduction

CLC's first major event was to organise an international conference on the theme Vatican II in the Context of Globalisation, Lay Contribution to the Church in the World to mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council (V2 + 40) on 11 October 1965. Over 60 participants from 13 countries (mostly Asian countries) took part in this gathering.

The year 2002 also marked the 120th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Cardinal Cardijn, born on 12 November 1882, who was the founder of the Young Christian Workers (YCW) and an inspiration for many other lay movements.

Thus, we decided that the focus of V2 +40 should be on the role of lay people in the Church and the world. In this section of our site, we therefore present some of the background to the conference as well as various papers from the conference. We also include some material on the role of Cardijn at Vatican II as well as some information on various follow up initiatives.
